Old News - Four Wheeler Magazine 1968

What Were We Doing This Month . . . in 1968?

Some things have definitely changed in the last 40 years. The August '68 issue of Four Wheeler, for instance, was only 68 pages (and you could get it for only 60 cents). On the other hand, some things haven't changed a bit---and 40 years later, we're still heading down to Truckhaven Hills near Salton City, California, every spring for the annual Tierra Del Sol Desert Safari, as we did in August '68. Judging by the photos in our coverage, much of the wheeling there is the same as it ever was, though the crowds have grown a bit---we counted "nearly 600 vehicles" in attendance back then; nowadays, we'd guess you see 600 vehicles an hour on some of the Safari's busiest days. We thought it would be fun to take a look back at our coverage from the Psychedelic Era, and we'll be archiving more good ol' stories like this on our site in the coming months.
